INDIVIDUAL SPEECH TRAINING

In our Speech Training sessions, the emphasis will be on three key factors for effective speaking:

  • Voice. Borrowing from the expert vocal knowledge required for operatic training, we focus on how to develop, use & protect the voice, how to develop and make use of resonance and vocal projection, and apply it to pure speech. Singing exercises are optional!

  • Words. The main issue here is applying the acquired knowledge of how the voice is to be used effectively while speaking, building up the new skill systematically, so that the new vocal abilities can develop into useful habits. This may include pronunciation and articulation exercises if necessary.

  • Text. This refers to how words are used in the context of the message, so that the intended message can be more persuasive to the audience. This only tends to happen when the speech has both an emotional and an intellectual appeal to listener. The study includes text analysis, phrasing, and a series of dramatic techniques for greater emphasis in delivery of the speech.

Following the training of the voice, attention will be given to the preparation of a speech or presentation, including pacing, subdivision, style, how to relate to the audience, and how to handle performance pressure. To go deeper, the student of Speech can also benefit from understanding more about Movement, Character study, and Dramatic structure. [See: Individual Drama Training].
